Pete Carby, Gregg’s father, began racing when he was a young man and as Gregg got older, he passed the desire to go fast onto him. At the age of 9, Pete started his son racing quarter midgets. After winning over 150 races at a variety of tracks, in 1965, Gregg won the National Quarter Midget Championship at the age of 11.
After help ing his father reestablish his own desire for speed, Gregg started racing motorcycles in high school and made the state finals in 1974. Pete then told Gregg, if he would get off the motorcycle before you hurt yourself, he would put him in a stock car of his own. Without hesitation Gregg sold the bikes, equipment and accessories and started in dirt racing.
After winning several races from 1975 through 1979, he had ask his dad to take him to an asphalt race. From that point on there was no turning back for Gregg. Asphalt was the way he wanted to go.

Gregg continued his racing career at various tracks such as: Salem Indiana, Charlotte north carolina, Corbin Motor Speedway, I-75 Speedway.
